JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Medical Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs a variety of clinical/administrative responsibilities to assist in the examination and treatment of patients. Primary functions include: facilitating efficient patient flow; handling prescription renewals; processing lab specimens/requisitions; obtaining medication pre-authorizations; measuring and documenting vital signs; performing screening tests (urinalysis, hematocrit and hemoglobin); maintaining and stocking lab and exam rooms; maintaining an adequate inventory of medical supplies and medications; monitoring medication samples; and monitoring refrigerator temperature. Employees in this classification are expected to exhibit and promote a customer service standard of excellence in performance of all duties with patients, coworkers, and outside contacts.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Completes the Patient Intake Process

• Measures and records vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height and weight) • Assists in implementing the plan of care by collecting specimens • Collects health status data • Performs screening tests (urinalysis, hematocrit and hemoglobin) • Retrieves most recent laboratory data or other test results

2. Completes the required Documentation

 • Documents vital signs on appropriate form(s) • Documents results of screening tests (Urinalysis, hematocrit and hemoglobin) • Documents Lab results on Lab Flowsheet • Completes Daily Medication Log for all patients who receive Procrit • Completes Erythropoietin Injection form for all patients who receive Procrit or Aranesp • Processes Lab Requisitions and labels specimen(s) • Reviews and maintains current medication list for accuracy • Performs appropriate follow up as noted on the “Physician Routing Form”

3. Facilitates Prescription Renewals
 
• Collects faxed/telephoned pharmacy requests and telephoned patient requests for prescription refills • Assures that all pharmacy forms are completed and accurate • Facilitates the medication pre-authorization process and follows through to completion.

4. Facilitates the flow of data from Labs, Imaging etc.

• Obtains recent lab results • Reviews imaging results and promptly notifies Physician/Nurse Practitioner of abnormal values or cri tical results • Makes appointments, as appropriate, for diagnostic tests and promptly follows through to obtain results

5. Maintains Lab & Exam Rooms

• Insures that all exam rooms and Lab are clean, neat, and orderly • Stocks the exam rooms and lab with the appropriate medical supplies • Stocks the exam rooms and lab with the appropriate forms and lab requisitions.

6. Conducts routine Quality Control of Clinical Equipment

• Performs daily controls for Clinitek & Hemocue machines • Records refrigerator temperature daily • Tests Defibrillator monthly • Arranges annual maintenance inspection for scales, microscope, etc.

7. Maintains Inventory of Medical Supplies & Medications

• Insures physical inventory of medical supplies is adequate to support practice operations • Performs physical inventory of Procrit and Venofer; records on daily injection log and on spreadsheet

8. Communication Liaison • Handles patient calls regarding clinical matters (problems with meds, etc.) • Addresses patient questions and concerns
9. Insures efficient patient flow

• Rooms patient in a timely fashion • Notifies Physician patient is ready for exam QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education Requirements: Certificate of completion from an accredited medical assistant program />
Minimum Work Experience Requirements: Prefer a minimum of one (1) year experience

Other Skills and Abilities Required:
Ability to document legible, accurate notations in the medical records
Skill in using technique for specimen collection, taking vital signs, administering injections
Ability to distinguish normal from abnormal labs
CPR certification
Working knowledge of computers & automated patient data systems
Basic Math Skills Ability to use equipment and materials safely
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to work with others in a team-based setting
Ability to take direction
Ability to travel to other MANA practice sites
